Ring Neck Pheasant Tail Feathers; These economical feathers are great for a wide range of applications. The tanned and barred colour scheme lends itself well for many imitation designs. Especially good for use in nymphs. Well known as the main ingredient for the classic Sawyer’s Pheasant Tail nymph; usually tied on hooks in sizes 16 – 10. This simple design consists of only copper wire, thread and Ring neck pheasant fibres. Tie in the thread, tie in the Ring-neck pheasant tail fibres. Wind them forward. Tie in the copper wire. Build up a thorax. Lay the remaining Ring Neck Pheasant Tail over the thorax and tie off. One of the easiest to tie designs and very effective.
A good way to fish small Pheasant Tail Nymphs is to cast out the fly and just let it sink. Don't strip it in, but just let the wind move the fly. The best set-up for this is a light fly line in #2 to #4 line weight, with a long leader. For the leader material use fluorocarbon leader material for better sink rates. Some anglers like to use a strike indicator, but most of the time the takes will be solid and a strike indicator is not needed.
