We have sourced some very nice Black Bear locally. Northern dense fur variations make for a great product. Black bear is soft, yet has a large diameter which makes it a beautiful material for winging applications.

We provide Black Bear in 3 size variations: short, medium and long. Many clients think that longer is better but this is not the case. The shorter the hair the denser the fur. So on shorter hair you will get more flies out of a patch. You will also get a nicer wing out of hair that is approximately the correct length. The short variation is good for small flies (size 2 and smaller), the medium size is good for hook size 2 – 2/0 and the long size is good for size 2/0 and up.

Some examples for the use of Black Bear are the well-known Canadian “Black Bear” Atlantic Salmon fly, large Norwegian Fat Wing style flies, large Pike, Musky or GT flies, spun Intruder wings and more. Black Bear is great for underwing material or as a support for softer wings and Intruder collars. If you are looking for a nice mobile wing with great volume in a black colour, Black Bear is hard to beat. The hair can be propped in front of a dubbing ball, bead or disc which will give it lots of volume.
